Buffer (2026)

Between 4 and 8 walking (and sometimes singing) performers, video, stereo sound
18 minutes

Commissioned by Maulwerker and made possible with the support of the Ernst Siemens Musikstiftung.

Buffer is a kind of game piece — a cross between a ‘slow bicycle race’ and ‘snakes and ladders’ —   but in which both the aims and anticipated outcomes are uncertain. Speed is somehow the focus of the piece, or at least the idea of different speeds coexisting simultaneously — not only the variations in velocity between the racing performers, but also between the wind, the radio, the slowly growing trees and the flying insects that occasionally pass through the image.

[Please note, though not a technically complex piece, Buffer requires a large projection surface for the video on the same level as the performers — a back wall, a scrim hanging to the floor, or an opera screen for instance. Contact me for more details.]
