Residue (2024)

for 7vln, 3vla, 3vlc, db, tape (19 minutes)

Premiered in Strasbourg in September 2024. Commissioned by Musica Festival and Ensemble Resonanz with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.

Residue is divided into 5 movements:

1. second movement
2. st. john i (tape only)
3. st. john ii
4. air
5. inter

Residue takes as its starting point, several recordings of music that are sent through reverberation and delay units multiple times. The resulting sound is a blurring of the original music, an “aging” of it even — varying between the edge of recognizability and a slowly disintegrating residue of strange harmonies and echoing loops. This electronically processed material is then transcribed for the string ensemble in as much fidelity as possible. The final piece consists of the string ensemble music combined with fragments of electronics. There is of course a gap between the electronic source material and the resulting instrumental transcription, where, hopefully, another kind of music emerges that carries with it the ghost of sounds that have passed.

Live performance recorded at Musica Festival. Ensemble Resonanz conducted by Peter Rundel.
